Our Printing & Embroidery Techniques

Our Printing Techniques

Here are the main types of printing techniques used at Fashion Sourcing

Screen Printing (Silk Screening)

A traditional method forcing ink through a mesh screen. It is best for simple, bold designs in bulk and provides long-lasting, high-quality results.

Direct-to-Garment (DTG)

Digital printing that sprays ink directly onto the fabric. It excels at detailed, high-resolution designs, making it perfect for custom t-shirts with many colors.

Sublimation Printing

A heat-activated dye method that converts ink into gas, which fuses with synthetic fabrics (like polyester). It is ideal for all-over, vibrant prints that are soft to the touch and fade-resistant.

Direct-to-Film (DTF)

A flexible technique that prints designs onto a special film, which is then transferred to the garment. It is excellent for diverse fabric types and lower-budget, detailed orders.

Heat Transfer (Vinyl and Plastisol)

Uses heat and pressure to apply pre-printed designs, vinyl, or plastisol transfers onto garments.

Discharge Printing

A chemical process that removes the original dye of the fabric and replaces it with a new color, leaving a, incredibly soft, breathable finish.

Pigment Printing

A commonly used, cost-effective, and eco-friendly technique that applies pigment directly to natural fabrics, though it may feel stiffer than dye-based methods.

Rotary/Roller Printing

Used for industrial-scale fabric production, employing engraved rollers to apply continuous patterns.

Sustainable/Digital Printing

Uses eco-friendly inks with less water and waste.

Reflective/Rubber Prints

Innovative techniques used for functional or aesthetic, textured designs.

Our Embroidery Techniques

Embroidery has a lot of personalities in fashion—from couture drama to chill handmade vibes.

Here’s a breakdown of the main embroidery techniques that fashion sourcing works with

Hand Embroidery Techniques

Traditional, slow, and very luxe-looking.

  • Satin Stitch – Smooth, filled areas; great for flowers, logos, and bold motifs.
  • Chain Stitch – Looping stitches that create fluid lines; common in Indian and Middle Eastern fashion.
  • Running Stitch – Simple and linear; often used in minimalist or folk styles.
  • French Knots – Tiny raised dots; perfect for texture and detail.
  • Bullion Knot – Rolled stitches that look like little coils; very ornamental.
  • Stem Stitch – Ideal for outlines and curved shapes.

Machine Embroidery

Clean, consistent, and fashion-industry friendly.

  • Computerized Embroidery – Digital designs stitched by machine; widely used in ready-to-wear.
  • Monogram Embroidery – Initials or logos on shirts, bags, and accessories.
  • Appliqué Embroidery – Fabric pieces stitched onto a base fabric for bold contrast.

Decorative & Surface Embroidery

High-impact and often seen in eveningwear or couture.

  • Zardozi – Metallic threads, beads, and sequins; very rich and traditional.
  • Bead Embroidery – Glass beads, pearls, crystals for sparkle.
  • Sequin Embroidery – Shiny and glamorous; partywear staple.
  • Aari / Tambour Work – Hook-based technique for fast, dense designs.
  • Couching – Thick threads or cords laid on fabric and stitched down.

Cultural & Regional Styles

Deep heritage + fashion influence.

  • Chikankari (India) – Delicate white-on-white embroidery.
  • Phulkari (Punjab) – Bold, geometric, colorful floral patterns.
  • Suzani (Central Asia) – Large, symbolic motifs.
  • Kantha (Bengal) – Recycled fabric with running stitches.
  • Blackwork (Europe) – Geometric, monochrome designs.

Contemporary / Experimental Techniques

Fashion-forward and artsy.

  • 3D Embroidery – Raised, sculptural effects.
  • Thread Painting – Hyper-realistic images using layered stitches.
  • Mixed Media Embroidery – Fabric + metal + plastic + unconventional materials.
  • Laser-Cut + Embroidery – Tech-meets-craft hybrid.

Where You’ll See Them in Fashion

  • Couture: Zardozi, beadwork, tambour
  • Streetwear: Appliqué, machine embroidery, patches
